My creative journey through landscapes, seascapes and wildlife paintings began in the spring of 1979-yes, that long ago- in a suburb of Buffalo, NY. Spring arrives late in the northwest of New York State. Through a number of re locations, we have spent the first two decades of the 21st century on the Atlantic coast in southeast Florida. Periodically, creativity has to be stored away in the mind's attic, though, to await a better time. Such was the case for my drawing and painting. Energies and time were consumed in supporting the children, being part of a community and earning a living. But, all work and no painting makes Bob a dull person, so, that didn't happen.
For many artists, where you live drives what you paint. That works for me. In the southeast, there are marshes, savannas, swamps, shorelines, big waves at high tide, birds of prey. In the winter months, the sunsets are spectacular with the sun in the southern hemisphere. A photographer once observed that the clouds are Florida's mountains- constantly changing shape and color. These make up a deep reservoir of paintings in waiting.
And, there have been outliers through the years. My wife and I painted a triptych of the harbor at Mykonos, Greece- three 30" X 40" canvases for friends of ours of Greek decent. For one Christmas season, we painted butterflies by state on small canvases. Friends and families got a butterfly native to their state of residence. Our community was into charitable art auctions for several years and I contributed regularly. Was part of a co-op gallery in town for three years.
My paintings are blends, I think. No photo realism/hyper realism here. Some impressionism, some realism in detail, some camouflage art. I enjoy variety from the mountains of southwestern Arizona, to a storm on Cape Cod Bay to the Carolina low country to a bald eagle snaring a fish on Lake Sammamish, WA. And, last year for the first time in 38 years, I did portraits. (They are hard, but one helluva challenge.) In other venues, I was Artist of the Month at the Arts Arena Gallery in Delray Beach, the Ledbetter Gallery in Oakland Park (Ft. Lauderdale), the AE "Billy" Backus Gallery in Ft. Pierce- home of the famous Florida Highwaymen- the Marsh Rabbit Gallery in Jensen Beach and others. Countless people look at abstract art-all the rage these days in SOHO and uptown- and are enraptured. An observer of my work once said, "it's like looking out a window. " I'm good with that.
